Dermaplaning is a non-invasive exfoliating treatment which helps to clear the surface of the skin so that skin products, chemical peels, facials and serums can penetrate deeper into the skin. It also removes vellus hair (often called peach fuzz) leaving a soft, smooth surface ready for makeup and other products to glide on flawlessly.
The procedure involves the use of a single use, sterile scalpel blade. The blade is used on clean, dry skin on the face and neck areas. You will see an instant improvement in skin texture and tone, while longer term effects include increased cell turnover, reduced fine lines and dark spots, a reduction of acne scarring and the removal of fine facial hair.
For best results, the procedure can be performed monthly, each treatment takes around 30 minutes to complete. The treatment can also be safely combined with other treatments such as chemical peel, facials and LED light treatments to boost the benefits.
Dermaplaning is safe for almost all skin types except those with active acneic skin. It is particularly effective on clients with dry skin or rough skin texture as it helps to improve acne scarring and uneven skin tone. Dermaplaning is also safe while pregnant or breastfeeding.
Because dermaplaning removes dead skin cells and fine vellus hair, it is an ideal treatment to undergo before other treatments such as chemical peels and facials as it allows the products to penetrate the skin better and therefore enhances the results!
A frequent question asked is if the removal of vellus hair will cause it to grow back thicker and stronger? This is not the case, Vellus hair is a different type of hair to head hair (terminal hair) or beard hair (androgenic hair) and will always grow back soft and fine.
No. Dermaplaning is very gentle and should not be painful when performed by an appropriately trained person. The scalpel blade is very gently scraped across the skin and most people say it feels like scraping gently with your nails.
